Owned, earned, and paid” refers to the three core types of media (or marketing channels) that brands use to reach audiences. They differ by who controls the channel, whether you pay for exposure, and how the attention is generated.

Paid Media

Paid media is any marketing where you pay a platform to put your message in front of an audience.

  • Examples: Google Ads, social media ads (Meta, TikTok, LinkedIn), display banners, sponsored posts, TV/radio/print ads, paid influencer placements.
  • You control targeting, timing, and budget, but you “rent” the attention: when you stop paying, the reach stops.

Owned Media

Owned media is the set of channels and content that your brand creates and fully controls.

  • Examples: your website, blog, email newsletters, mobile app, and your official social profiles’ organic posts.
  • You own the audience relationships (e.g., email list, site visitors) and can reuse and repurpose content without paying per impression, but you must work to earn attention through SEO, content quality, and community building.

Earned Media

Earned media is unpaid exposure you “earn” when third parties talk about your brand.

  • Examples: press coverage, blogger reviews, customer reviews, social shares/mentions, word-of-mouth, organic creator content about you.
  • You don’t control the message or timing, but it often carries high credibility because it comes from others, not directly from you.

How They Work?

  • Owned is the foundation (your site, content, email list).
  • Paid amplifies owned content and accelerates reach (ads driving traffic to your site or promoting a post).
  • Earned builds trust and extends reach organically (reviews, press, shares sparked by good owned/paid work).
