Google’s First Data Center in Sweden
Google has officially begun construction on its first Swedish data center in Horndal, marking a significant expansion of its infrastructure in the Nordic region. The new facility is designed to support increasing global demand for key services such as Google Search, YouTube, and Google Cloud.
The project is expected to create approximately 100 direct jobs and represents a major milestone in Google’s presence in Sweden, which dates back to the opening of its first office in 2004. The company highlighted that the data center will help empower local businesses, developers, and creators to grow within the digital economy.
Sustainability Focus Data Center
Sustainability is a central focus of the new site. The data center will utilize air-cooling technology to minimize water consumption and is being built to support off-site heat recovery systems, allowing excess heat to be reused by nearby homes and businesses.
This initiative aligns with Google’s broader environmental commitments, including its contribution of over 700 megawatts of renewable energy capacity to Sweden’s grid since 2013.
In addition to infrastructure investment, Google announced a €5 million community fund aimed at supporting education, sustainability, and workforce development projects in the region. The company stated that this initiative is intended to foster inclusive growth and ensure that local communities benefit from the expanding digital economy.
